72 Cell Self-Watering Ultimate Growing System is rated 2.9 out of 5 by 87.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Have used for 5 years I've been buying Burpee's grow kits for 5 years and have been generally satisfied. I grow 300-400 flowers a year, which lets me save a lot of money and choose my own varieties. I especially like the bottom watering feature, which keeps plants from damping off, for me. Some years, I can re-use them and other years I have to buy entirely new kits even though only one part failed. More often than not, after two years I have to buy an entire replacement kit because the plug trays break or warp or otherwise fail, so I wish they sold replacement plug trays, because all the other parts are easily washable and last longer. That said, I see other reviews talking about the plugs of peat not filling up the trays. I take all the plugs out, put 1/3 to 1/2 of them in a large bowl, soak them with hot water and then break them up by hand. I then add seed starting mix and use the combined mix to fill the trays. I keep the remaining plugs to use the following year. Another reviewer mentioned that the mats dry out and don't wick water. Generally, when watering, about once a week, I pour water over the mats until the reservoir is full, this re-soaks the mats and bottom waters the trays. I also sometimes top-mist the plants, because at first the roots don't reach the mat. For seeds that germinate easily, like marigolds, zinnias, cosmos these kits work great for me. I have a grow light system, which I'm sure makes a difference. I do not (yet) have a heating mat, but my guess is that both the grow light and heat mat are necessary to germinate harder-to-germinate seeds, such as perennials.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not as good as before! I have a greenhouse-24X16 ft. I am a Master Gardener of Missouri. I know how to plant, grow and transplant. I have used these trays since spring of 2002. My plants are taking longer and longer to sprout because the supports holding the plant cells are getting weaker and weaker so the dome does not fit right. When the supports gets weak the cell trays do not sit evenly. The cell trays are high on each end, but the middle sags. Water goes unevenly to the plants and the dome lets in cooler air. Replacement parts are unavailable except for the absorbent fabric that sits on the support tray. I want replacement support trays. Except I have read in other reviews that they are made even more cheaply than before with less support. Also the mats are very, very hard to clean after 2 seasons of us. I Called Burpee about cleaning the mats. They said to soak in light soapy water-the layers of the mat separated.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unhappy customer I was really excited about trying to grow flowers from seed. I bought seeds from Burpee as well as the self-watering tray and followed the directions to the letter. Only handful sprouted and then later died. Not what I would expect from Burpee. Buyer beware.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nothing came up My order of over $60 was a complete failure. Nothing came up. I followed the instructions to the letter. The pellets never resolved or filled the planting cup. Very disappointed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from sorta works, not as advertised Plastic trays and matts did sprout my seeds, but very sporadic success depending on type of plant. the dirt blocks that come with it don't work. have to Buy your own dirt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked well. Good for the price. This seed starter is worked well for me. All of my pellets expanded and proved to be a fine medium for growing. I did have to poke the pellets with a pencil to break them up but I expected that. Quality is what I expected for the price. Picture is a little dark but this was taken after about 10 minutes after watering.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WORKS LIKE A CHARM I'm glad that I wasn't influenced by all the naysayers describing how the grow pellets failed to expand as advertised. Not that their observation was unfounded, but I would like to think! And I did! I used a table fork and loosened them somewhat and continued on with the instructions. The result was only losing 3 out of 72 starts of "Creeping Thyme", which was my fault. I look forward to starting more plants next year with this system.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works good to hold seeds and plants. I bought this recently and started to use it. The picture is misleading. The planting disks puff up the don't fill the space just get tall enough to reach the top of each cell. Also the watering mat is virtually useless. Both end of mine are sitting in water. The mat under the cells is dry. It does not wick water up as advertised. Great holder for seedlings but there are more inexpensive alternatives.
