Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wastes of $$ I originally purchased the 72 cell system, when I opened it, it was missing several of the pellets,(I attempted to call Burpee's customer service to try to get extra pellets before returning, but sat on hold for 30min! I was always 'next in line') so returned it and purchased 2 of the 32 cell system to start some flowers for our bee garden and some vegetables. They started out great, seeds sprouted quickly, but then it was time to transfer them to our flower beds, the soil completely fell apart!! No matter if the soil was wet or dry, it just didn't 'pop out' of the container like it shows on the picture. We even tried using a tiny spoon to scoop the seedlings out, no go. So, gave up and went and purchased flowers to plant. Should have done this in the first place instead of wasting $30 for the trays, plus the seed costs.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from mildew Don't buy this. It mildews, doesn't keep evenly moist and germination was really poor. I am very experienced growing seedlings; I give this system an F.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great concept and easy to setup ... Just started phase 1 of my seeds. The system was easy to setup and the pellets expanded perfectly! My initial impression is 4 stars, because the clear plastic cover did not fit over the seed tray. I tried trimming the seed trays, but the cover still does not sit nicely over the trays.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No success I bought a 36-cell version of this in a big box store . I thought the wicking mat and the platform were a bit odd, but worth a try. I'm also not a fan of those expanding pellet inserts. The system was not successful for me; I got one start from my experiment. I'm much happier and way more successful starting my seeds in a floating a Styrofoam holder in a domed container. I love Burpee seeds; not this particular product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wish I could give it 0 stars I bought this set last September and it seemed like such a good idea. Before I actually planted anything in it, I bought two more in preparation for starting a large quantity of seeds the next month. I noted several problems as soon as I started the seeds. None of the three plastic lids covers actually seem to fit over the trays. It was not just one of them. The soil pellets were a disaster to deal with and they do not expand well. The other reviews on here are spot on: they don't grow the way they are described, it takes multiple attempts, they require breaking up manually, and when they do expand they don't actually fill the cell. It is a huge mess. Within a week of starting the seeds there was heavy white mold-like growth on the planters and all 200+ of my seedlings died. I am very careful about washing my hands before handling seed and soil so I don't think that I contaminated anything. I am a nurse and treat seed starting like a sterile procedure. I also had several other potted plants on the same table and they had no growth on them and they were watered with the same water source. I don't think it was something in my home since no other nearby plants were affected. I think the seed pellets were the source. I have rarely been dissapointed with anything from Burpee and they usually have great customer service. I emailed Burpee customer service on 11/13/17 about this issue and never received a reply. I tried yet again this year and had the exact same problem. I cleaned all the trays with a bleach solution before starting over and it still happened. Yet again, the other plants on the same table did not have any problems. This wa a huge waste both time and money, not only with the product but with the hundreds of lost plants.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy - fail proof seed starting I bought this directly from Burpee in January. When it arrived I opened it and hydrated the pellets the next night. Everything worked perfectly. The watering mat kept the pods evenly moist (you have to make sure that the cells are evenly sitting on it, and that there is 1/2" - 1" of water in the much and it might be too soggy - I read this in the directions). I'm pretty sure that if the watering was left up to me and my memory... I probably would have killed some plants. After my first round of transplants I filled the cells with more soil (regular potting soil) and started some more! I put the tray on top of my fridge to stay warm and hung a grow light over it...I don't know how well this would work with just natural light. I notice a lot of people have bad reviews of this system....not my experience at all - but then again, I ordered directly from burpee and used the system right away. Buying the system from a big box store where it has been sitting for who knows how long, in who knows what temperature didn't sound appealing to me. I look forward to buying the refill pellets and starting more seeds next winter!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wouldn't buy again I live in a small townhouse and thought this would be a great way to start plants with a minimum of mess since my grow light is in my kitchen. First, the pellets didn't expand even though I let them sit in water for a day. I planted two rows each of chives, cilantro, peppers, dill, basil and mint. The mint never grew at all. The herbs never grew strong root systems, were leggy, and did not survive transplant so this was a waste of time. The peppers grew well, but the sides of the containers collapsed when getting them out to transplant them and we'll see if they survive. Burpee offered to replace them, but it's just not worth it.
