Wish I could give it 0 starsI bought this set last September and it seemed like such a good idea. Before I actually planted anything in it, I bought two more in preparation for starting a large quantity of seeds the next month. I noted several problems as soon as I started the seeds. None of the three plastic lids covers actually seem to fit over the trays. It was not just one of them. The soil pellets were a disaster to deal with and they do not expand well. The other reviews on here are spot on: they don't grow the way they are described, it takes multiple attempts, they require breaking up manually, and when they do expand they don't actually fill the cell. It is a huge mess.
Within a week of starting the seeds there was heavy white mold-like growth on the planters and all 200+ of my seedlings died. I am very careful about washing my hands before handling seed and soil so I don't think that I contaminated anything. I am a nurse and treat seed starting like a sterile procedure. I also had several other potted plants on the same table and they had no growth on them and they were watered with the same water source. I don't think it was something in my home since no other nearby plants were affected. I think the seed pellets were the source.
I have rarely been dissapointed with anything from Burpee and they usually have great customer service. I emailed Burpee customer service on 11/13/17 about this issue and never received a reply. I tried yet again this year and had the exact same problem. I cleaned all the trays with a bleach solution before starting over and it still happened. Yet again, the other plants on the same table did not have any problems. This wa a huge waste both time and money, not only with the product but with the hundreds of lost plants.

Easy - fail proof seed startingI bought this directly from Burpee in January. When it arrived I opened it and hydrated the pellets the next night. Everything worked perfectly. The watering mat kept the pods evenly moist (you have to make sure that the cells are evenly sitting on it, and that there is 1/2" - 1" of water in the tray...to much and it might be too soggy - I read this in the directions). I'm pretty sure that if the watering was left up to me and my memory... I probably would have killed some plants. After my first round of transplants I filled the cells with more soil (regular potting soil) and started some more! I put the tray on top of my fridge to stay warm and hung a grow light over it...I don't know how well this would work with just natural light.
I notice a lot of people have bad reviews of this system....not my experience at all - but then again, I ordered directly from burpee and used the system right away. Buying the system from a big box store where it has been sitting for who knows how long, in who knows what temperature didn't sound appealing to me.
I look forward to buying the refill pellets and starting more seeds next winter!

No longer a fan from
Wouldn't buy againI live in a small townhouse and thought this would be a great way to start plants with a minimum of mess since my grow light is in my kitchen. First, the pellets didn't expand even though I let them sit in water for a day. I planted two rows each of chives, cilantro, peppers, dill, basil and mint. The mint never grew at all. The herbs never grew strong root systems, were leggy, and did not survive transplant so this was a waste of time. The peppers grew well, but the sides of the containers collapsed when getting them out to transplant them and we'll see if they survive. Burpee offered to replace them, but it's just not worth it.

bad pellets, nice starter trayI could not get the pellets to expand so I just used my own soil in the starter tray. My seeds are sprouting and I will re-use the tray.

72 Cell Self-Watering Ultimate Growing SystemGreat concept, but the soil pods were "petrified" (a term used by my local gardening center) they were literally like little rocks, and no amount of soaking (I went 3 days) was going to change that. Luckily, I just replace the pods with a few bags of seed starter soil and my plants are looking good!

Have used for 5 yearsI've been buying Burpee's grow kits for 5 years and have been generally satisfied. I grow 300-400 flowers a year, which lets me save a lot of money and choose my own varieties. I especially like the bottom watering feature, which keeps plants from damping off, for me. Some years, I can re-use them and other years I have to buy entirely new kits even though only one part failed. More often than not, after two years I have to buy an entire replacement kit because the plug trays break or warp or otherwise fail, so I wish they sold replacement plug trays, because all the other parts are easily washable and last longer. That said, I see other reviews talking about the plugs of peat not filling up the trays. I take all the plugs out, put 1/3 to 1/2 of them in a large bowl, soak them with hot water and then break them up by hand. I then add seed starting mix and use the combined mix to fill the trays. I keep the remaining plugs to use the following year. Another reviewer mentioned that the mats dry out and don't wick water. Generally, when watering, about once a week, I pour water over the mats until the reservoir is full, this re-soaks the mats and bottom waters the trays. I also sometimes top-mist the plants, because at first the roots don't reach the mat. For seeds that germinate easily, like marigolds, zinnias, cosmos these kits work great for me. I have a grow light system, which I'm sure makes a difference. I do not (yet) have a heating mat, but my guess is that both the grow light and heat mat are necessary to germinate harder-to-germinate seeds, such as perennials.
