How to Plant Garlic

Homegrown garlic has freshness and flavor that simply can’t be bought. Better yet, it’s easy to grow in gardens of all sizes – including in containers!

For a spring harvest, plant your seed garlic in the fall. Once you’ve selected a garlic variety right for your garden and received your bulbs, here’s how to plant garlic cloves properly:

Step 1
Create 1-2” deep holes in fertile, well-drained soil.

Step 2
Space holes 4-6” apart in rows 6-12” apart. We recommend using a dibbler!

Step 3
Separate the individual cloves from the seed garlic bulb.

Step 4
Plant cloves with the root down, pointed end up. Push a single clove into each hole, then cover gently with soil. Each clove will multiply in the ground, forming a new bulb as it grows.

Step 5
Don’t forget to give the bed a good watering after planting!

Know Before You Grow

Always plant “seed garlic” like what you can buy from Burpee – our garlic is specially selected for fertility and growing! The garlic bulbs you buy in the supermarket are typically treated to prevent sprouting.

Before you buy bulbs, also make sure you’re choosing a garlic suited to your growing environment. Hardneck varieties are best for colder climates, while softnecks thrive in warmer climates. Learn all about which type of garlic you should grow.
