Carex: Potted Perennial Plant

How to Plant

Planting Potted Plants:

  • Choose a location in full sun with moist, mell-drained soil.
  • Prepare the bed by turning the soil under to a depth of 6-12 inches removing any debris, and lightly raking as level as possible.
  • The addition of organic matter (leaf mold, compost, well-rotted manure) benefits all gardens and is essential in recently constructed neighborhoods.
  • Plant on a cloudy day or in late afternoon to reduce transplant shock.
  • Dig a hole for each plant large enough to amply accommodate the root ball.
  • Unpot the plant and gently loosen the root ball with your hands to encourage good root growth.
  • Place the top of the root ball even with the level of the surrounding soil. Fill with soil to the top of the root ball. Press soil down firmly with your hand.
  • Use the plant tag as a location marker.
  • Thoroughly water and apply a light mulch layer on top of the soil (1-2 inches) to conserve water and reduce weeds.

How to Grow

  • Keep weeds under control during the growing season. Weeds compete with plants for water, space and nutrients, so control them by either cultivating often or use a mulch to prevent their germination.
  • Mulches also help retain soil moisture and maintain even soil temperatures. For perennials, an organic mulch of aged bark or shredded leaves lends a natural look to the bed and will improve the soil as it breaks down in time.  Always keep mulches off a plant’s stems to prevent possible rot.
  • Careful watering is essential in getting perennials off to a good start. Water thoroughly at least once a week to help new roots grow down deeply. Soil should be damp at about 1 inch below the soil surface. You can check this by sticking your finger in the soil. Water early in the morning to give all leaves enough time to dry.  One inch of rain or watering per week is recommended for most perennial plants. You can check to see if you need to add water by using a rain gauge.
  • Until plants become established, some protection from extreme winds and direct, hot sunlight may be necessary.  Good air movement is also important.
  • After new growth appears, a light fertilizer may be applied. Keep granular fertilizers away from the plant crown and foliage to avoid burn injury. Use low rates of a slow release fertilizer such as Garden-tone, as higher rates may encourage root rots.

Growing Tips

  • Carex is low-maintenance once established.
  • Trim plants back periodically to about 4 inches above the soil level to rejuvenate them.
  • For varieties that stay green year round, remove dead foliage as opposed to cutting back the entire plant.
  • Use carex in containers, as an edging, in a rock garden.

Eragrostis, Purple Love Grass is rated 1.8 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from It's not purple or even red. The grass grew into lush global shapes. It isn't purple or even red just several shades of green. The grass is now surrounded by wispy "flowers" which totally camouflage the green grass. It's very light and airy looking and doesn't have the drama and mass I was expecting. I wouldn't order it again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed Obviously you have to plant these in clumps which was not made clear because my two lone plants if not staked simply fall over. And - the blooms are white.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from purple love grass I bought three plants last year. They did well but never produced the "stunning and unique pink cloud." This year, they appear to be dead.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pathetic & Sad... I wanted this plant so I ordered it during a sale. I got the plant and was completely shocked at how teeny tiny it was!! Way too much money on such a small plant!! In any event it died within a few days. I had no idea the plants were so small and am very disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful This is the prettiest grass of all! This year was the first time I planted it and it turned out better than I imagined, with a profusion of delicate lacy seedheads. While not pink, still georgeous!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from pink love grass Well not so much any color of pink yet just planted early summer. This is a beautiful full vibrant plant that is a rich green with little white buds on it, Hope it will turn pink. Planted with fresh good soil, used only organic fertilizer on all my new baby plants. Smells really bad but plants love it. Watered daily, All my plants from Burpee did well. Hope this turns pink as I was counting on this for the pink color in my new flower bed zone 5.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great space filler. I ordered several of these grasses to be fillers for a new flower bed. It does the job! I got these early in the Spring and they arrived healthly and a lot bigger than other items I ordered from another company.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Sad grass Unfortunately this love grass never turned purple last season. I thought that it would be at least growing and green by now, but after I trimmed it back it remained brown and small, and hasnt grown at all this spring yet. I am hoping summer will help it to get going, but I have a feeling this was a dud, unfortunately...
