Sowing Directly in the Garden:

  • Direct sow seeds in average soil in full sun after danger of frost.
  • Prepare the soil by removing weeds and working organic matter into the top 6-8 inches of soil; then level and smooth.
  • Most plants respond well to soils amended with organic matter. Compost is a wonderful form of organic matter with a good balance of nutrients and an ideal pH level, it can be added to your planting area at any time. If compost is not available, top dress the soil after planting with 1-2 inches of organic mulch, which will begin to breakdown into compost. After the growing season, a soil test will indicate what soil amendments are needed for the following season.
  • Sow seeds thinly and cover with ¼ inch of soil.
  • Firm soil lightly and keep evenly moist.
  • Seedlings will emerge in 14-21 days.
  • Thin plants to stand 8 inches apart when plants are 1 to 2 inches high. Thin again to 2 feet apart when plants are established.
  • Keep weeds under control during the growing season. Weeds compete with plants for water, space and nutrients, so control them by either cultivating often or use a mulch to prevent their seeds from germinating.
  • Mulches also help retain soil moisture and maintain even soil temperatures. For annuals an organic mulch of shredded leaves lends a natural look to the bed and will improve the soil as it breaks down in time. Always keep mulches off a plant’s stems to prevent possible rot.
  • Keep soil evenly moist but not wet. Fertilize as needed with a slow release fertilizer designed for flowering plants.
  • Monitor for pests and diseases. Check with your local Cooperative Extension Service for pest controls recommended for your area.
  • Plants can self-sow, so allow some to set seeds.
  • Remove plants after they are killed by heavy frost in fall to avoid disease issues the following year.
  • Cleome is easy to grow and needs little care.
  • Cleomes make striking, fast-growing annual hedges. Their thorns and dense foliage create an effective barrier, while prolific blooms create a pleasing mass of color.
  • Add tall varieties to the back of an annual, perennial or mixed border for their long bloom periods and airy flower heads. You can use them to fill in between clumps of perennials, and they combine well with many shrubs.
  • Cleomes also make interesting cut flowers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow!!! This has been blooming for almost 3 months! Planted it near some perennial grasses, look wonderful together. One tip, plant directly in soil when weather permits; seeds took off much faster than starting in seed trays. You won't be disappointed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did not grow I purchased several different packages of flower seeds from Burpee, all of which i started indoors under a grow light. The snapdragons germinated very well The flowering tabacco germinated so so. I started the cleome twice and not one seed germinated.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cleome, Queen Mixed Colors My Grandmother had this flower in her garden. It has been around a long time, so it is a favorite. If you are looking to create a romantic or cottage style garden, then you want this one. Very easy to start from seed, as easy as Marigolds. It is a hardy, robust, and vigorous plant that blooms until frost. It is very tall so you will want it in the background. If you prefer one color instead of the mix, then save the seeds from that plant. I hated the stickiness of the seed pods as a child, but learned to appreciate with my eyes, not my fingers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Spider Flower-Cleome Hassleriana I had a freind, who's friend purchased the seed your Burpee 3 years ago she gave me a couple rootings, and I planted them-Despite the fact that this is a introduction to gardening, For everything you want to grow the "Spider Flower" is just the masterpiece you could create, This beautiful garden of flowers are prize winning, the best show a gardener's bed could ever grow, these flowers will grow either in the sun or shade,in groups of flowers and height in summer .These flowers like well-drained,fertile,organic soil. They are hardiness in zone 6-9, The mature size in width is 24inches and tall they develop any where from on to five feet in height. The spider flower will spice up any garden bed with delightfully bizarre flowers bursting from tall stems lined with stiff, smelly, sticky leaves, especially in the grand old Queen cleomes.Perhaps because of its distinctive aroma and furry foliage, spider flower used to be a "love" it or hate it plant. They are not hard to grow, but will be stunted by prolonged droughts, so they are perfect candidates for planting along a soaker hose.Plant spider flowers in soil amended as needed to enrich it and improve its drainage. Dig the hole a bit larger than the root ball, and if the roots are tightly wound, tear them slightly before planting. Watering deeply once a week or more often in hot, dry weather will sustain plants and flowers: use fertilizer through the season if needed. Potential problems: no pest: if they reseed to excess, remove seedpods before they open and keep the plants mulched.
