One of the first spices to arrive in Europe from the Orient, Zingiber officinale is the source of the pungent, aromatic spice called ginger. The spice is produced from the rhizome (underground stem) of the plant. This is an essential plant for the edible garden, in mixed combos in containers on the patio or for mass plantings. It is easy to grow, heat tolerant and low maintenance. All ginger requires are hot, humid, shady conditions and a fertile, loamy soil, as it tends to be a heavy feeder. A tender perennial, container plants may be brought inside for the winter.
