How to Plant

Planting Bare Roots in the Garden:

  • When selecting a site, keep in mind that rhubarb is a perennial vegetable and the planting bed should not be disturbed. Early soil preparation is essential in order to establish a healthy rhubarb bed. Rhubarb prefers full sun and a good organic well drained soil. In areas with hot summers, some afternoon shade may be advisable.
  • Roots received before planting time may be stored in moist soil or sand and set for 2-3 weeks in a cool place until you are ready to plant.
  • Plant roots as early as possible in spring as the soil may be worked.
  • Set the roots 3-4 feet apart each way and cover with 3-4 inches of fine soil.
  • Firm lightly and keep evenly moist.
  • Plants emerge in 6-8 weeks.

Planting Seedling Plants in the Garden:

  • When selecting a site, keep in mind that rhubarb is a perennial vegetable and the planting bed should not be disturbed. Early soil preparation is essential in order to establish a healthy rhubarb bed. Rhubarb prefers full sun and a good organic well drained soil. In areas with hot summers, some afternoon shade may be advisable.
  • Plant in fall when shipment arrives.
  • Set plants 3-4 feet apart each way.
  • Dig a hole for each plant large enough to amply accommodate the root ball.
  • Set plants level with the surrounding soil. Fill with soil to the top of the hole.
  • Press soil down firmly with your hand.
  • Keep evenly moist.
  • Mulch with 2-3 inches of organic matter.
  • Plants will go dormant soon after planting in fall. Mark plant locations with a stake before the foliage goes down. Before new growth begins in spring, apply fertilizer to the ground around the stake.

How to Grow

  • Keep weeds under control during the growing season. Weeds compete with plants for water, space and nutrients, so control them by either cultivating often or use a mulch to prevent their seeds from germinating. Avoid disturbing the soil around the plants when weeding.
  • Keep plants well watered during dry periods to promote rapid, uninterrupted growth. Plants need about 1 inch of rain per week during the growing season. Use a rain gauge to check to see if you need to add water. It’s best to water with a drip or trickle system that delivers water at low pressure at the soil level. If you water with overhead sprinklers, water early in the day so the foliage has time to dry off before evening, to minimize disease problems. Keep the soil moist but not saturated.
  • Fertilize in mid-summer.
  • If plants develop seed stalks, cut those off at the base; seed production will weaken the plant.
  • Monitor for pests and diseases. Check with your local Cooperative Extension Service for pest controls recommended for your area.

Harvest and Preserving Tips

  • Begin harvesting rhubarb plants the second year for two weeks. The third year, harvest for 6 weeks. After the third year, harvest until the stalks become thinner.
  • Always leave at least one third of the leafstalks on each plant so it does not get weak.
  • Remove the leaves from the picked stalks and discard them. NOTE: Do not eat leaves, they are toxic.
  • Do not harvest from frozen plants in fall.
  • Leafstalks may be eaten raw or cooked.
  • In the fourth year, divide plants by 1/3-1/2.
  • Rhubarb may be frozen, pickled, dried, made in chutney or jam.

I cannot say, yet, whether my rhubarb is successful or not, The roots that I received were at least half the size of my hand...one looks very good they other fell apart...BUT...I have planted it just the same and will advise later. I had purchased Victoria from another vendor and had received roots the size of a little finger...Burpee sent an impressive size!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Rhubarb When I received my order od rhubarb I was worried the plants were dead. The leaves fell off and the plants seemed to go away. After a few weeks I am reporting new stalks/leaves have appeared. Hopefully next season I can pick some.

This was first year and it is too early to harvest, but the location is good, we had nice rain, and I am disappointed in both the size and appearance of this rhubarb. I cannot locate old variety we used to grow and will continue to look for it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from big root BIG BIG ROOT Thank you Burpee Got my rhubarb crowns today and WOW BIG HEALTHY ROOTS even though I've not seen them since childhood it doesn't take a expert to see the bright red stalks already starting from the crown.....1 1/2 inch tap roots ..so grabbing my spade , soil a nd mulch in they went....I was concerned about the ship time but it appears my crowns are no worse for wear ...MANY THANKS TO MY NEW FRIEND'S AT BURPEE rest assured I'll be back for everything garden

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Results I received my roots (4 Victoria and 2 Crimson Red) and planted them within 3 days. The roots were very large and I was impressed that a couple already had leaf buds appearing. Leaves emerged in less than a week and now, at 2 weeks, I already have a couple with flower buds appearing near the ground. Leaves are large, green and very healthy. I'm curious how they'll do over the winter (may put the roots in my spare fridge for a month). Looking forward to a good crop next year. I am very pleased and impressed. I would have paid twice the price!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good so far I received two roots in the mail in late April/early May. Both appeared healthy. I did not plant them until the third week of May, which was later than advised in the package insert. Despite that, they both grew this year. We had an exceptionally rainy summer, which was not good for the majority of the garden. However, the rhubarb grew well. I did not harvest any of the stalks since everything I've read said to wait a year or two. The stalks were on the thin side but I am guessing that is due to it being its first year in the ground and, possibly, due to all of the rain. I plan to amend the soil once the gardening season has ended and hopefully between that and another year of maturity, we will have delicious rhubarb next year.

Although you should not harvest rhubarb the first year, i thought that they were such big plants i was tempted to take some stalks for pie, mmmmmmmm yummyyyyyyy! :) Its disapointing that other reviewers had bad luck, but i recomend you take your chances! When my rhubard arrived they were in perfect shape, when i planted them in the ground, they both grew huge! I did notice that one plant was smaller than the other, but it also is a smaller root chunk. The biggest one has leaves of about 1 1/2- 2 feet long! Many stalks too! This year i cant wait to harvest for pie!!!!
