Growing Radishes
Radishes are one of the quickest and tastiest crops to grow in early spring and again in fall. See how easy it is to grow in your garden.

How to Sow

  • Sow radish seeds in well-worked soil after danger of frost in early spring, again in late summer for fall crop. In frost free areas, sow in the fall.
  • Sow thinly in rows about 6" apart. Cover with 1/2" of fine soil; firm lightly and keep evenly moist.
  • Seedlings emerge in 4-6 days.
  • Thin to stand about 2" apart.
  • Sow winter radishes in midsummer for late fall and winter use. They can grow large with several inches of root showing above ground.

How to Grow

  • Keep weeds under control during the growing season. Weeds compete with plants for water, space and nutrients, so control them by either cultivating often or use a mulch to prevent their seeds from germinating.
  • Water continuously and evenly. Avoid over-fertilizing radish plants.
  • Keep plants well watered during dry periods to promote uninterrupted growth. Plants need about 1 inch of rain per week during the growing season. Use a rain gauge to check to see if you need to add water. It’s best to water with a drip or trickle system that delivers water at low pressure at the soil level. If you water with overhead sprinklers, water early in the day so the foliage has time to dry off before evening, to minimize disease problems. Keep the soil moist but not saturated.
  • Monitor for pests and diseases. Check with your local Cooperative Extension Service for pest controls recommended for your area.

Harvest and Preserving Tips

  • Pull spring radishes when they are the proper size for the type, about 25 days after planting. If you wait too long to harvest they will become pithy. Push back the soil to see if they have formed bulbs, and taste one or two to see if they are ready. Finish harvest before warm weather comes.
  • Cut off the tops and store in plastic bags at 32-40 degrees F, in the refrigerator, for up to 3 weeks.
  • Harvest winter or fall radishes as needed in fall. Dig all remaining roots before the ground freezes and store throughout the winter (use as needed).
  • Radishes may be eaten raw in salads or sautéed in butter with salt, pepper and herbs as a side dish. Winter radishes may be cooked like turnips or used in stir fry. They may also be pickled.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So easy to grow! This might be the easiest vegetable I've ever grown. I have only grown this one variety so I can't comment on how it compares to others, but they produced really well and taste great. I sowed 2 rows of seeds in my window box, in early March. They aren't exactly ornamental, but the window box was empty in the early spring. It's also warmed up enough to plant much earlier than my raised beds. The only work I had to do was thin them significantly, because everything germinated. I was lax about watering, and this window box is not exposed to rain, but all that did was slow them down. I gave them twice as long as the days to maturity listed, but that is still a pretty quick to go from seed to full sized radish!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Belle Rings This radish is one of the most dependable veggies I grow. I haven't experienced any problems with germination and often kid people that I think these could grow under the hood of a car - they are that easy. Plus, there's near-instant gratification in seeing green leaves poking up through the soil in about a week. Be sure to soften your soil by tilling in some peat so you get the legit-looking round guys; you'll risk getting odder shapes in harder soil. The taste is nice and peppery but not so much as to have you panting. Great on their own with a dash of salt or sliced into a salad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a kick! My mother-in-law loves Radishes, So I couldn't help but buy these since they are ready in 22 days. It has been two weeks now and they look great! Lots of green leaves and we even pulled one up its not a big one but their growing. We had her taste it and she said they taste great, better then the store brought ones and they have a kick to them! I would buy these again, I recommend them for any beginner gardener like myself. It doesn't take long and this way you can see what your doing right and wrong. I will be growing some more!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yummy and crunchy! I adore the taste of Cherry Belle radishes. I've been growing them for many years and have never had a problem with Burpee seeds germinating. The trick is to not plant the seeds too deep. If you do plant them too deep, you're going to have problems. I have always had excellents results with Burpee's Cherry Belle radishes and recommend them to all gardeners. Boy are they good and crunchy! I've also used the seed tape which I recommend, too because there is no need for thinning.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from no radishes I bought Burpee radish seeds on Aug. 2, 2012 and planted them on Aug. 4, too close together but I thinned them after they sprouted a week later. I watered them daily and gave them Miracle Grow maybe every other week. was that too much? By the end of Aug. I carefully dug up 3 or 4 plants but no radishes, not even tiny ones. The package says 22 days to maturity. I waited a few days & tried the first week of Sept. No radishes. Then I tried several of them again Sept. 12 and still not a radish on any roots. Just dirt. I think the seeds are no good. Disappointed
