How to Sow

  • Sow lettuce seeds in average soil in full sun in early spring for first crop. Sow in late summer for fall crop.
  • Sow every two weeks to extend harvests.
  • In late summer, sow in a protected are that stays below 75 degrees F.
  • Sow thinly in rows 12 inches apart and cover with ¼ inch of fine soil.
  • Follow the spacing recommended on the seed packet for specific varieties.
  • Firm lightly and keep evenly moist.
  • Seedlings emerge in 7-10 days.

How to Grow

  • Thin to stand 8 inches apart when seedlings are 1-2 inches tall.
  • Keep lettuce plants well watered during dry periods to promote rapid, uninterrupted growth.
  • Lettuce is shallow-rooted, so avoid disturbing the soil around the plants when weeding.
  • Unless there is regular rainfall, lettuce plants must be watered deeply at least once a week and more frequently during periods of drought.
  • Mulch with a layer of compost or clean straw to help the soil retain moisture.

Harvest and Preserving Tips

  • For the best quality, pick lettuce early rather than late as lettuce allowed to grow too long may be bitter and tough.
  • Try to harvest in the morning when the leaves are crisp, sweet, and full of moisture.
  • Harvest looseleaf types anytime the leaves are large enough to use.
  • Harvest butterhead types when they have formed heads and the leaves are a good size.
  • Cut the heads below the crown.
  • On leaf types, you can just pick a few leaves at a time, if you like.
  • Store for 5-7 days in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Many gardeners wrap leaves in moist paper towels.
  • Lettuce is a classic ingredient in salads. It adds crispness to sandwiches and can be used as a garnish, braised, or added to soups. Many of the looseleaf cultivars are also decorative in the garden.

Lettuce, Looseleaf Blend is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pacific Northwest Zone 7 Powerhouse Producer! Grew wonderfully in a raised bed augmented with cow manure and organic compost. Only purchased 1 seed packet, and staggered plantings every 3 weeks from mid-May through late June. VERY PLEASED with both the quantity produced and quality of the product. My family of 4 was easily fed for 2 months, and I gave away approximately 30 gallon bags to friends and co-workers as well. Bought again for fall planting, and will definitely be buying for years to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from VERY easy to grow I grew these in a raised bed the first season and in small pots on a hot, sunny deck last season. I could not have been lazier in my seed application--I sprinkled as I saw fit and mixed them lightly into the soil, then watered as needed. They grew beautifully in both areas and kept growing through the summer and into winter. A few freezes finally killed off the deck plants this season, but they lasted through November-ish, which was a pleasant surprise. The fall planted lettuce did not bolt at all, and was crisp and plentiful. The pots were literally overflowing with lettuce from Aug - Nov, and the lettuce grew back consistently as we snipped leaves.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this packet I directly sowed in soil amended with my own compost in spring in a salad box. Came up beautifully. Even a baby Robin loved to use the lettuce to hide in! Beautiful colors and delightful flavors. Have started another crop in the same box (late Aug. - early Sept.) and the box is growing good. Will continue to plant in the spring.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice and easy to grow! This lettuce is very easy to grow and as this was my first time, I learned that I'm going to make a new bed next year for my lettuce :-D I do not agree with one of the statements made below, about how this is expensive lettuce.... I made two 6 feet rows, and I have enough to make at the least two more for fall! It's a lot of seeds, so don't pour the bag in quickly :-p I let my lettuce grow back a couple of times, so once it's out you can keep it going for about a month (at least that's how it was for me) by keeping it short.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice variety! This is my 2nd year growing this mix. I like being able to plant just a row, but getting a good variety. Will grow again next year

Rated 1 out of 5 by from REAL Expensive Lettuce!!! Purchased a packet of Burpee's Looseleaf Blend lettuce (from Burpee) thinking I was getting enough seed to plant a nice sized row with seed left over.......... Imagine my surprise when I opened the packet (Net Wt 550 mg, or 500 seeds) to discover I had enough seed to plant a 10' row very sparingly! Had to drop everything to go purchase more seed locally. OBTW the seed I purchased was $1.49 for 3 grams versus Burpee"s 550mg for $3.25!! Learned a valuable lesson here!
