How to Sow

  • Sow lettuce seeds in average soil in full sun in early spring for first crop. Sow in late summer for fall crop.
  • Sow every two weeks to extend harvests.
  • In late summer, sow in a protected are that stays below 75 degrees F.
  • Sow thinly in rows 12 inches apart and cover with ¼ inch of fine soil.
  • Follow the spacing recommended on the seed packet for specific varieties.
  • Firm lightly and keep evenly moist.
  • Seedlings emerge in 7-10 days.

How to Grow

  • Thin to stand 8 inches apart when seedlings are 1-2 inches tall.
  • Keep lettuce plants well watered during dry periods to promote rapid, uninterrupted growth.
  • Lettuce is shallow-rooted, so avoid disturbing the soil around the plants when weeding.
  • Unless there is regular rainfall, lettuce plants must be watered deeply at least once a week and more frequently during periods of drought.
  • Mulch with a layer of compost or clean straw to help the soil retain moisture.

Harvest and Preserving Tips

  • For the best quality, pick lettuce early rather than late as lettuce allowed to grow too long may be bitter and tough.
  • Try to harvest in the morning when the leaves are crisp, sweet, and full of moisture.
  • Harvest looseleaf types anytime the leaves are large enough to use.
  • Harvest butterhead types when they have formed heads and the leaves are a good size.
  • Cut the heads below the crown.
  • On leaf types, you can just pick a few leaves at a time, if you like.
  • Store for 5-7 days in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Many gardeners wrap leaves in moist paper towels.
  • Lettuce is a classic ingredient in salads. It adds crispness to sandwiches and can be used as a garnish, braised, or added to soups. Many of the looseleaf cultivars are also decorative in the garden.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Curly Lettuce Last summer I ordered the Green Ice on a free shipping promotion and it became one of my favorite lettuce types. The curly leaves look and taste amazing on sandwiches and in salads. Green Ice grows well in both warm weather and in the cold, its also somewhat frost tolerant.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Favorite This is my favorite and most reliable producer for spring and fall greens. We harvest the top 1/3 to 1/2 of the plant two or three times a week for a nearly continual production for weeks on end. When it begin to peter out, we let it grow and harvest the head.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lettuce I cut this lettuce 4 or 5 times in the spring before it bolted, easy to start from seed. Great flavor, great for making "tortilla" wraps!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The queen of Lettuce I have planted this lettuce for many years. Each year I get a huge crop. The flavor is amazing and the leaves are strong and stay crisper than any other lettuce I have tried. My customers rave about the flavor and ask me where I got it. Burpee is the best!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best lettuce! This lettuce grows tall and strong. The medium green leaves stay crispy and curly. Our family gets better yields from this than we have with other leaf lettuce. The yields are so good that we use less than half of the space we previously did to get a constant supply of lettuce even through the hot weather. This lettuce will be a staple in our future gardens. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really nice lettuce The stem part of the leaf beats my favorite romaine hearts or iceberg, the outer part of the leaf is delicate and sweet. You could make two distinct salads or enjoy the contrast in your salad. Gourmet and easy to grow. I grew them at about 1" spacing without thinning and had loads of mini heads. Very productive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent First lettuce I ever planted but was thrilled with the results. I planted about 10 feet of this lettuce and was overwhelmed with its production. The lettuce had excellent flavor and texture and was found to work as well on a sandwich as it did in salad. My mother told me that this lettuce brought back memeories of the lettuce my grandfather used to grow. For that reason and its overall quality I will be planting this again next year.
