  • How to Sow

    • Sow lettuce seeds in average soil in full sun in early spring for first crop. Sow in late summer for fall crop.
    • Sow every two weeks to extend harvests.
    • In late summer, sow in a protected are that stays below 75 degrees F.
    • Sow thinly in rows 12 inches apart and cover with ¼ inch of fine soil.
    • Folow the spacing recommended on the seed packet for specific varieties.
    • Firm lightly and keep evenly moist.
    • Seedlings emerge in 7-10 days.

    How to Grow

    • Thin to stand 8 inches apart when seedlings are 1-2 inches tall.
    • Keep lettuce plants well watered during dry periods to promote rapid, uninterrupted growth.
    • Lettuce is shallow-rooted, so avoid disturbing the soil around the plants when weeding.
    • Unless there is regular rainfall, lettuce plants must be watered deeply at least once a week and more frequent during periods of drought.
    • Mulch your home garden with a layer of compost or clean straw to help the soil retain moisture.

    Harvest and Preserving Tips

    • For the best quality, pick lettuce early rather than late as lettuce allowed to grow too long may be bitter and tough.
    • Try to harvest in the morning when the leaves are crisp, sweet, and full of moisture.
    • Harvest looseleaf types anytime the leaves are large enough to use.
    • Harvest butterhead types when they have formed heads and the leaves are a good size.
    • Cut the heads below the crown.
    • On leaf types, you can just pick a few leaves at a time, if you like.
    • Store for 5-7 days in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Many gardeners wrap leaves in moist paper towels.
    • Lettuce is a classic ingredient in salads. It adds crispness to sandwiches and can be used as a garnish, braised, or added to soups. Many of the looseleaf cultivars are also decorative in the garden.

  • Lettuce, Buttercrunch is rated 4.8333 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buttercrunch..... This lettuce is beyond easy. I planter a couple dozen heads last year and virtually all came up with several in containers. In a fit of laziness, one container was a bit out of the way and I never got around to eating it. All of a sudden I noticed a long stem and a bunch of little flowers on it. It bolted. Eventually, months later, I just dumped the container in the compost pile. Well this year, the gravel I use for the garden floor has a couple dozen heads of buttercrunch growing out of it in the area of the head that bolted last year. I will probably do the same again and let one head bolt with the hopes of a repeat next year. If you only get one lettuce, this is the one to get.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable cool-season lettuce This is my go-to lettuce for late winter sowing in Northern California. I just scatter it in an area roughly 2' x4' and thin it as it grows. We love Caesar salad and this lettuce is its tasty and super crunchy foundation. For the last couple of years we've been plagued by birds nibbling on the entire patch of lettuce. But we outsmarted them with a cage built of redwood 1x1 and wrapped with chicken wire. This cage is almost weightless and easy to reposition when weeding or harvesting. I left a few heads outside the cage so the birds can concentrate on 'their' lettuce and we get all the rest, intact.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from wowyummy wow i ate this lettuce and i was just blown away! it was so delicious and amazing. Yum i made a salad and it had that butter and to finish it off that yummy crunch! The heads developed quickly and formed perfect ball shapes. I had heads of buttercrunch in the shade, the sun, and partial sun! The heads of lettuce survive everywhere! It did not bolt, and left so much lettuce i had to give away the majority of it! The salads made with this lettuce were tasty and buttery-crunchy... Wow burpee has a winner with this delicious variety of lettuce.
