Celery is a cool-season crop and needs a long growing season (80-140 days) , so it is best to plant as soon as soil can be worked. Celery can stand a light frost and prefers light, rich moist to wet soil. Sow celery seeds in North in a warm, well-lighted area or in a hotbed about 10-12 weeks before the last heavy frost date in spring. In South and other mild areas, sow from fall to early spring. Sow seeds 1/4" deep in seed starting formula. Keep evenly moist. Seedlings emerge in 10-21 days.
If you're planning to a vegetable garden, the best place to plant may not be in the ground. It may be above ground.
