Bean, French Filet Stringless
Delicious haricot vert (French green bean).
The delicious, rich flavor of these thin, straight, tender beans is unlike any other. Easy to grow, they reach their flavor peak at 5-7" long and a mere 3/8" wide. Dark green pods are streaked with purple. Plants yield early and heavily but need no support. One 2 oz. seed pack will sow a row of about 20 ft. Our seed is not treated. Burpee Exclusive.
Sow in average soil in a sunny location after danger of frost and soil has warmed, from
spring to midsummer. For bush beans, sow in rows 1 1/2-2 1/2' apart, sow seeds 2-3" apart and
cover with 1" of fine soil. Firm lightly. Seedlings emerge in 7-14 days. For bush beans keep sowing bean seeds every 2 weeks for a constant supply of delicious beans. Lima beans require
warmer soil and air temperatures than snap beans to germinate. For pole beans, sow seeds 1"
deep and 3-5" apart in a row along a trellis, netting or fence. Or set poles solidly into
ground 3-4' apart and sow 8-10 beans 1-2" deep around each pole.
How to Grow
Thin gradually to stand 4-6" apart when seedlings are 1-2" high. In dry weather, keep soil
well-watered. Cultivate or mulch to keep weed-free, but do not work or handle plants when
leaves are wet. Bean plants may stop producing beans at the hottest point of summer. When temperatures back down, bean pods will again begin to develop. Pole bean plants bear more pods over a long time and can last till first frost.
Pick your Burpee beans frequently to ensure the crop keeps producing. Snap bean pods are picked before seeds are formed, at a stage when pods are crisp and snap easily. Let pods of shell and dry beans dry and crack before removing the seeds from the pods. French beans should be picked when no thicker than a pencil. Harvest Lima beans when pods swell and bulge from the bean seeds inside.
