Forcing Amaryllis

Amaryllis is a great bulb for holiday and winter forcing. Its gorgeous, dramatic flowers add brilliant color, elegance, and life to a winter room. And it is an easy bulb to force. Amaryllis bulbs sold this time of year have been pre-chilled and are ready to be forced. Pot up one into a clay pot or any decorative container with drainage holes so there is only about 1 inch of space between the bulb and edge of pot. Fill the bottom with a few inches of pebbles and then fill the container about half full of soil. Place the bulb in the middle of the pot and add more soil so about three quarters of the bulb is covered in soil. Water well, place in a sunny area, and keep soil moist. The plant will rapidly develop foliage and a flower stalk and bud. It should be in full bloom in about six weeks. If stalk gets floppy, add a stake without puncturing the bulb. To maintain a beautiful and healthy Amaryllis throughout the holiday season, keep soil moist, keep in cool temperatures (70F days, 64F nights).
