Nanho Purple is a compact butterfly bush that is well suited for the smaller garden. Flowers are fragrant and lavender-purple and contrast with gray-green foliage. It grows best in full sun but will tolerate some shade and under most conditions will bloom from June to September. Blossoms are great for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds and as cut flowers.
Start indoors in a warm, well-lighted area about 8-12 weeks before last frost. Sow thinly and press into planting formula. Keep moist.
How to Grow
Seedlings emerge in about 20 days at 65-75°F. Before transplanting in the garden, accustom to outdoor conditions by moving to a sheltered place outside for a week. Transplant hardened off seedlings to the garden after all danger of frost. Annual lobelia prefers rich, well-drained soil in full sun but will also bloom well in partial shade. They bloom best in cool temperatures and may flower less when hot weather arrives. However, they usually perk up in late summer and bloom right up to the first fall frost.
Trailing forms of annual lobelia are ideal for hanging baskets and window boxes; they make an attractive annual groundcover, too. Upright types are good for flower beds, borders, edgings, or patio containers.
