How to Sow
START hibiscus seeds indoors in a warm, well-lighted area about 10-14 weeks before last expected spring frost. Soak seeds in room temperature water for about 8 hours to speed germination. Sow 1/4"" deep in seed-starting formula.
How to Grow
Seedlings emerge in 14-21 days at about 70°F. Transplant individually to larger containers when seedlings have at least 2 pairs of leaves. Before transfer to garden, accustom to outdoor conditions by moving to a sheltered area outside for a week. After danger of frost, set hibiscus plants at least 2’ apart in permanent, sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil.
Harvesting
Use hibiscus plants in perennial gardens, where their giant-sized flowers will add stunning summer color. They can also be planted in shrub borders, since established plants are shrub size, and are effectigve when used as accent plants against fences or hedges. The flowers are so large they almost seem artificial, but for eye-catching color, they’re hard to beat.
