To help a live tree survive the holidays and be successfully replanted outdoors, first choose a
healthy tree with a large, firm root ball. Keep the tree in an unheated garage or a sheltered
area on a porch until it is time to bring it indoors. Keep the wrapped root ball moist.
Place the tree in a large container that supports it snuggly, such as a half whiskey barrel or
galvanized tub lined with layers of moist burlap. Do not let the tree dry out. Place it in the
coolest part of the room away from heat sources. Enjoy it indoors for a week at the most. Move
the tree back to the garage or porch and plant as soon as possible. Digging the hole early
before the ground freezes is essential, as is keeping the tree moist once planted.
