Sowing Seed Indoors:

  • To grow as a houseplant, sow indoors at any time.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in seed starting formula in the container where the plants will grow.
  • Keep the soil moist at 70 degrees F
  • Seedlings emerge in 7-14 days
  • As soon as seedlings emerge, provide plenty of light on a sunny windowsill or grow seedlings 3-4 inches beneath fluorescent plant lights turned on 16 hours per day, off for 8 hours at night. Raise the lights as the plants grow taller. Incandescent bulbs will not work for this process because they will get too hot. Most plants require a dark period to grow, do not leave lights on for 24 hours.

Sowing Directly in the Garden:

  • Sow outdoors in spring after all danger of frost has passed in average soil in full sun.
  • Remove weeds and work organic matter into the top 6-8 inches of soil; then level and smooth.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in rows 1 inch apart.
  • Firm lightly and keep evenly moist.
  • Seedlings emerge 7-14 days.
  • Keep weeds under control during the growing season. Weeds compete with plants for water, space and nutrients, so control them by either cultivating often or use a mulch to prevent their seeds from germinating.
  • For best results, water just as soil surface dries.
  • Re-sow often to maintain months of vibrant grass.
  • Trim back to 1 inch every second week to promote fresh growth.
  • Cat grass usually re-grows quickly several times after being nibbled.
  • Monitor for pests and diseases. Check with your local Cooperative Extension Service for pest controls recommended for your area.

Harvesting and Preserving Tips:

  • Pets may graze plants at will.
  • People can make smoothies with young green leaves cut at 1 inch from the ground as needed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cat, and dog, love it! Planted this just north of a cement wall, so it's mostly in the shade all day. The seeds still sprouted and sprouted early. They grew fast and easily. I didn't have to take care of them much. At first it was my dog that found them and munched on them for a while. We usually have him outside. When I brought the cat out, we placed her next to the cat grass and she immediately started to chomp on it. She ate quite a bit, didn't regurgitate it like she does with normal grass and keeps eating it when we bring her outside. My dog still eats it too. I let it grow out of control so it's quite a bit taller (1 1/2 feet) and a bit thicker now but both the cat and the dog still love it. I also bought a few hundred seeds from various companies this year to try and see which one had the best seeds. Out of all of them, Burpee seeds were the only ones that had something come up from every packet. Almost all of the other seeds from other companies that I bought from did not come up. They are all planted in the same areas and they are similar types of plants/flowers. This next growing season, I'm only going to stick with Burpee seeds. I uploaded a picture that I had already sent to Burpee, which they posted on Facebook. It's my cat (Titters) chomping away.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast Growing and Cats love It! The cat grass grew and germinated fast. 2/3 of my pacts love it ( besides the fact that one of them is a little crabby, a male, and 13 years old), other than that, cats younger than 11 years old love it. Kittens especially love it with my quite little girl kitten nibbling on it. I sometimes forget to close my basement door ( plant room), and she goes down there and chews it before it's 3-4 inches tall. Give it to them and they love it! Great

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cat grass was a big hit with Lucy The Burpee cat grass seed germinated quickly and easily. It grows fast and best of all our cat, Lucy, loves it. Lucy had previously rejected cat grass we purchased from a pet store, so she is a fussy customer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Catgrass Fast growing and my cats love it. When I want them to come in, I put the catgrass container on the patio, and the cats come right to it!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Grew Quick! Cat Loves It! I was excited to order this catgrass for my cat (who is just not quite smart enough to be allowed outside haha). I put it into a small 6 inch pot with a seed starting soil, and it was tall enough for my cat to munch on after only 5 days! I measured one day (24 hours) the growth to be almost an entire inch! The grass looks just like the picture, and my grass is just as concentrated with only using 1/2 the seeds in the packet. My cat loves to nibble the grass already and doesn't seem to mind that he isn't allowed out in the "real wild".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Rabbit loves this! I bought this brand of cat grass to grow for my bunny. SHE LOVES it! Whenever I find it at the store, I purchase all of the seed packets!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dogs love it too! I have 2 dogs that LOVE to eat this, I got it to plant just to see if my two fur kids would eat it since they like to eat grass at the park, this is just not for cats my advice get multiple packets, to grow in-between.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fair warning : buy multiple packets or else... Be prepared to plant more than one pot : if your cats are like mine, they will devour the first pot you make. I've never seen them lose control over cat grass like they did these from Burpee's. Both of my cats are indoor cats and like grass : but I had to literally separate them from each other as they ate the grass like they hadn't had something to eat in weeks.
