Gardening Tip of the Day

  • Avoid the temptation to get busy in a wet yard and garden. Walking on rain saturated soil compacts it, eliminating air in the soil.

Digging planting beds prematurely makes big, wet, shovel-sized clumps of soil which eventually dry into hard chunks. Later, these are extremely difficult to break up without ruining the soil's structure and reducing it to a fine dust.

Wait until a fist-sized ball of soil will easily crumbly when squeezed before digging or tilling.
