Burpee's 'Big Daddy Hybrid' Tomato is Here
January 2012 – Warminster, PA – "Tomato fanatics across the nation will rejoice," says Burpee's chairman and CEO, George Ball. "Our biggest tomato introduction for 2012, 'Big Daddy Hybrid,' is a game-changing tomato breakthrough. It's poised to be a customer favorite in 2012 and beyond," says Mr. Ball.
For gardeners who want it all, 'Big Daddy' delivers. And how could it not? 'Big Daddy' was bred from Burpee's famous 'Big Boy Hybrid' tomato.
"From a home gardener's perspective, 'Big Daddy' has everything," says Chelsey Fields, one of Burpee's lead horticulturists. "Gardeners will adore the flavor and disease resistance. Plus, it produces the most gorgeous, ruby-red, round fruits that weigh in at a whopping 15 ounces apiece."
While 'Big Daddy' is sure to delight just about anyone who has a passion for homegrown tomatoes, it's a particularly nice variety for new gardeners because of its exceptional garden performance and resistance to disease, including verticillium. Because 'Big Daddy' produces such a large yield over a long harvest season, it's also a good choice for gardeners with room to grow only one or two tomato plants.
Fields says 'Big Daddy' is an indeterminate tomato, and gardeners can expect fully mature fruit approximately 78 days after transplanting into the vegetable plot.
Since 'Big Daddy' is a new, exclusive Burpee variety, it can be purchased only through Burpee's catalog or online at www.burpee.com. Gardeners can choose to start 'Big Daddy' transplants from seed indoors, or they can purchase 'Big Daddy' transplants to be shipped in time for spring transplanting to the garden.
