Burpee Celebrates 135 Years of Gardening Firsts with its 2011 Catalog
December 2010--Warminster, PA-- In 2011, W. Atlee Burpee & Co., the leading name in home gardening, celebrates 135 years of innovation and dedication to America's gardeners.
The 2011 annual catalog reflects Burpee's commitment to research, innovation and quality. "For the past 135 years, we have demonstrated our dedication to our customers. Burpee helped transform home gardening and has consistently evolved with America's changing garden needs," says George Ball, Burpee chairman and CEO, explaining Burpee's longevity as America's premier garden resource.
The 2011 Burpee catalog offers a bumper crop of vegetable and flower introductions, including Burpee's 'Kings of Color' tomato collection, "a four-pound feast of tremendous color and flavor."
'Kings of Color' offers vibrant red, pink, orange and yellow fruits, each weighing in at a whopping one pound. Loaded with flavor, these tomatoes are excellent 'slicers' for sandwiches and salads. The multicolored beauties, garlanded with their sinuous, leafy vines, provide a colorful display in the vegetable garden.
"Our 'Raspberry Lemonade' Zinnia Mix injects a 'wow' factor in your summer garden," says Ball. "I have never seen a zinnia mix this beautiful in all my years of gardening."
This dazzling, show-stopping splash of coral, yellow and starlight rose will create a sensation in a sunny border or in your cutting garden. The 'Raspberry Lemonade' mix, which thrives in dry conditions, will become a colorful favorite with gardeners in the south.
A key to Burpee's 135 years of success is anticipating and serving the customer's wishes. This year, for the first time, Burpee customers can purchase their vegetable plants one at a time with the new Mix & Match program. Instead of having to purchase a 3-plant set of the same variety, Mix & Match allows customers to create their own custom combinations of 3 different plants--one tomato, one pepper, and one eggplant, for instance--in a set.
"This is a great option for the new or small-space gardener," Ball says, "allowing you to save money and space."
Burpee Celebrates 135 Years; Plus One
Burpee's new, enhanced, redesigned website reflects the company's 135-year tradition of new innovations. George Ball thinks the redesigned Burpee.com website should share equal billing with 2011's star products.
The dramatically enhanced site is better-looking, easier to use and more informative, offering a dramatic improvement for online customers. The new Burpee.com website offers quicker, easier navigation and expanded growing information on every product and variety. The site offers instant, effortless access to a stellar array of breakthrough new flower and vegetable must-haves for every home garden.
Other gardener-friendly features include a zip code personalization tool and the 'Get Your Garden Growing' section, which is loaded with helpful articles and information on both growing and enjoying the fruits (and vegetables) of your labors.
To celebrate 135 years, Burpee plans to host several open days at its historic Fordhook Farm in Bucks County, Pa., which has served as the company's plant research facility since 1888. Open Day dates at Fordhook are as follows: Sunday, May 22nd; Friday, August 19th; Saturday, August 20th and Sunday, August 21st.
Burpee is one of the very few home gardening companies that conducts thorough trials for hundreds of new variety contenders, only to select the best performers each year.
"This anniversary does not just reflect the company's existence," observes George Ball, "it represents 135 years of customer dedication."
