Terrible implementation of poor ideaI would give this zero stars if I could. I just tried to use this product and I will never buy a seed starting kit from Burpee again. The pellets float, so it is impossible to keep them in an upright position, and they don't absorb water uniformly so you have to crush each one manually before they soften enough to plant in. Placing the self-watering mat over the spacers is awkward at best and the tray is impossible to move without spilling water when you have the whole thing assembled. To be fair, the instructions do tell you this up front, but it would have been impossible to plant the seeds and extremely difficult to assemble the unit in the growing stand, so this is an absurd restriction which should have alerted me to stop right there and return the product immediately. Both the Jiffy seed starting system and the Grow Plugs system are infinitely superior to this one.

very bad kiti bought this kit, the plugs are the worst i have ever used. over a dozen are unusable. they floated to the top and stayed dry. i had to keep pushing them down, and they still stayed dry. finally i dumped all the lousy plugs, meaning all 72 of them, and filled the cells with miracle gro starting soil. now if the wick does not work, nothing will grow unless i water it when needed. but i really need to say, DONT BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK!!! it is truly the worst starting kit i have ever bought.

Poor Quality overall.I received four of these kits for free with the promotion of purchasing seeds and plants. As you can see in the images, the quality of these are not worth what they cost.
I was first concerned and upset that out of the four kits, three had some damage to the plastic portion of the 72 cells. I had 5-6 that had been cracked open and at least two dozen that showed signs of crushing damage. I found this odd since the outer plastic carrier and the packaging (both from burpee and the shipping box) didn't show any signs of damage or crushing.
I was also disappointed that the top covering is a sheet of plastic film. Most of the other brands I have used in the past come with clear plastic lids that allowed all of the plants to germinate and grow for the first 6 weeks to prevent drying out or cooling of the soil for the varying times in germination of different seeds. I am now looking to purchase either lids for these cells or new kits to transplant into due to the variation in germinating times for the different types of seeds I am growing.
As you can see in the second image attached, the soil pellets varied considerably in size and quality of soil. I had one in which the pellets expanding nicely and had plenty of soil; but two others had such poor quality soil that I had to use a fork to break them up even after soaking overnight. These two kits didn't fill more than half of each cell. The last kit had half and half of the two qualities mentioned above. One 36 cell block expanded nicely while the other 36 cell block didn't expand very well.
As far as the plant stands and self watering sheets; I chose not to use the stands after initially setting up the kits (prior to adding water) due to their lack of stability with the dry pellets. The stands were so tall that the plant cells were above the top rim of the watering base and it wouldn't take much to knock over the entire tray. I was also unable to figure out how the water would pass through the black plastic material that was to be facing up for the self watering sheets.
I did like the plant-tone packets as well as the burpee stakes and planting plot sheets that came with each kit; but they won't make up for the poor quality of the rest of the product. I also found it odd that each kit came with 3 stakes for naming rows but there are a minimum of 6 rows (longer length) or 12 columns. I would gladly give up these additional accessories for a stronger plastic cell plot and a clear lid.

Seed traysSelf watering tray in the 72 had very poor pellets. 36 seed tray worked correctly with pellets. So far growth of seed very poor compared to miracle grow and black gold seed starter mix. I had to a a lot of seed starter to the 72 tray. Where I added seed mix the sprouts are healthier. Self watering doesn't appear to work well. Don't waste your money.

great idea, bad pelletsReceived this free with my order, must have been last years system. Followed instructions to the letter. After the required 13.5 cups more than 75% of the soil pellets were still rock hard. Double the water and still no exapnsion. Had to use a metal lobster fork to break them up and still needed to add my own soil. So far, not worth paying for.

Works GreatThis growing system has everything you need (except for the water and seeds) to get started. The self watering works great, keeps soil nicely moist, not wet. I wish it came with a plastic cover though. The thin plastic sheets it comes with do not work very well. They blow off the tray constantly. I had to find a plastic cover from an older growing system I had. The little dirt pods that come with the set just barely fill the containers half way so I had to add more dirt because I wanted more growing room for my seedlings.

Cheaply made.I have been using Burpee growing systems for years now. I started by using the "non eco-friendly systems". They were brown in color. They worked well but were fragile. If you were careful cleaning them, you could reuse them the following years.
This system looks the same, but is made with eco-friendly plastic. Well it is as fragile as the other one, but even if you're careful, it's hard to keep it intact. I have one that melted in the sun.... No joke, I washed it and left it out to dry. 30 minutes later it was all crumpled.
I gave it 2 stars because the system itself works well and the soil they use is really good. Near 100% success growth.
But unfortunately, over the years, the price has gone up and the quality down. Not woth the $25 anymore.

Eco Friendly Ultimate Growing SystemWow this was the best April fools joke I ever had....I was excited to get my seeds started so I did so yesterday April 1 2013 and made sure the pellets were all flat side down I had good warm water and poored it over all the pellets filling each chamber....well they did start to expand but only about half way, I then poored more water on all the chambers but didnt pay attention to how much water was allready in the plastic container all together and then ended up with a mess all over the table... Well I pulled the pellet trays off and dumped the water that I now spilt on the floor and then put everyting back and added more water and no the pellets did not expand any further than half way... what a mess....needless to say the whole system was thrown as far as I could out the patio door and is now somewhere in the snow maybe making a warm home for some mouse.....I will buy my plants the old fashion way AT THE LOCAL GREEN HOUSE...thanks Burpee.
