Worst purchase everBought this kit to start growing my own sets after a long bout of bad health. I remember when I used to purchase Burpee products exclusively for my gardens. No more. Soil cylinders have been soaking for 24 hours with no expansion. Barely 1/3 of pod is full, not enough to plant a radish in, if I could penetrate the cylinder. The wicking setup looks like a great idea and I always had good luck with domes to germinate. I will try a competitors soil-less medium and hop for the best at this point. Such a disappointment from a formerly proud company

The Best for Starting Seeds!I have been using these for five years now and I think they are truly great. I think this is the first review I have ever written for anything, at least that I can recall, but I was so surprised by all the negative reviews that I felt I needed to add my input.
I pour near-boiling water from a tea kettle over the pellets (flat side down) and they pretty much all expand instantly. I use enough to get them to puff up, then go back through with a fork to fluff/mix/redistribute/level the growing mix, then add a little more water to hit any dry spots and saturate everything well.
I have never had the problems others are complaining of. The mix is sterile, doesn't easily mold, and has a great success rate. The seedlings are easy to remove and transplant to paper cups once they get going. I start tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants primarily. I like the small size of the cells as it lets me fit a lot of seedlings into a small area. I keep them on a table in the sun during the day and on the mantle at night. I have found this to work better than trying to keep them out of sunlight while germinating.
I usually get these at Tractor Supply, but I decided to look online to see if I could just order a case of the pellets and re-use the plastic trays/covers.
I have not had anywhere near the success with other similar products for germinating seeds.

Resuable if carefulTo make this system work best, I dump all the growing mix in a large plastic container, then add water and mix until everything expands, and then spoon the growing medium back into the individual cells. Otherwise, the growing medium does not expand properly. With proper care, I can reuse the cells next year with other growing mix. The self watering feature is great as long as you lift the pots to pour in additional water. It cannot, however, hold a lot of weight. I tried repotting my seedlings into large pots and then setting the pots on the self-watering capillary mat but the weight of the pots crushed the plastic supports. Still using them this year for seed starts but looking for a stronger self-watering system.

Used these for years and reuse them every winterI've used every type on the market and these worked great for me every time. I use to tear them up or leave them out and they would get damaged. Now I clean them a store and they last. But they alway's do good on my plants but many others do to.

Terrible productThis is the first time I used this seed starting kit and it will be my last! I lost a whole season of plants because of them. I only wish I had read the reviews before I bought. I've been starting my own plants for many years with another brand product and have never had an issue. Everything the previous posters said about these kits is true. The main issue was that I had extremely poor germination and growth. I know my seeds were good. Those that did germinate did not grow well. I finally resorted to transplanting the few plants that germinated into another medium and then they grew, but by then it was too late to save my season. I had to buy started plants, and I don't like to do that. Not only was I out the plants, but also the money I paid for seed and for the four 36 cell kits I had bought. Needless to say I am extremely disappointed and will never buy another starter kit from Burpee again.

MehOut of the 72 cells, I think about 2, maybe 3 actually expanded...Kind of a disappointment.
I left a bunch of warm water inside the tray with the hopes that they might expand overnight, and I went ahead and sowed my seeds anyways.
Worst case scenario, I have to resow in the same plastic container with a bag of potting soil or some root plugs

Pettets hard as BRICKS!Yesterday I purchased the 72 Cell Greenhouse Kit. It has been over 24 hours and the dirt "bricks" are still that, "bricks". Even after soaking them overnight, they have only expanded about 25%. I have used this system in the past with great results, but something is very wrong here. I dug the packaging out of the trash and watched the video suggested on the package and make sure there I had done it right. When I pick them up I can break it into a couple of layers, but I can't even stick a fork or a paring knife into the pellet. Needless to say, I think I got a bad batch if there's such a thing. Wish I had read the reviews. I guess I'm not the only one. What a waste of time and money.
