Backyard Composter is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from convenient composter This bin keeps me composting year round;snowy winters made me give up trekking down to the compost pile as I got older. It was just too hard to struggle through the snow and ice. We weren't going to dig a path to the compost every time it snowed, and this bin fits perfectly right next to the back door; I can literally push the snow off the top step, and still throw out all the kitchen prep after every meal. All those scraps from peppers, onion skins, beet tops, egg shells, potato skins, kale stems, clam shells, orange rinds, apple cores, etc, go right into the bin. Come spring, we do empty the bin, and then move it down back, out of sight, but continue to use it. We have a large bin, made of pallets, fillled with fall leaves, sod from edging the beds, seaweed, and aged manure from a local farm. I fill a plastic bucket with materials from the large pile each fall so that I can toss a scoop over each addition of kitchen scraps that go into the bin during the winter. Call me a wimp, but I love the convenience of having a compost bin just outside the back door - blizzard or no blizzard!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not the best for me I foolishly thought this bin would work for the yard at my new house. Let's just say I had completely filled it with yard waste (leaves, etc) in about a week. I have a large yard (half acre) with a lot of landscaping so next spring I'm going to build two large open compost bins so I have a place to put all my compostable materials. I found it rather clunky and I don't quite understand the design. Is the bottom door for shoveling out the completed compost? This bin might be a good choice for those with a smallish city/suburban yard with minimal landscaping and garden waste.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Portable composting by the back door! I just recieved my composter last month and put it together in the kitchen. It was very easy to put together and I was able to plop it right outside the back door. Since it is getting cold so quickly now, I was afraid I might get lots of mice trying to get to the scraps I put in, but so far so good. I keep it near the back door, to make it easier to dump my scraps from the kitchen. I also keep a pile of leaves that I gathered with the lawn mower in a sealed trash can right next to the composter. That way, when I toss in some banana peels and green peppers stems, or whatever we have left over from the veggies we cooked last night, I can grab a handful of leaves to toss right on top. The bottom opening in the composter also makes it easy to mix everything up. Having a can with some garden soil also helps provide the microorganisms you need to break down your compost. I can't wait until planting time next spring and all that black gold I can add to my plants.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good composter I own two of these, and I really like them. I initially thought they would be hard to put together because there are many pieces in the box, but it goes together really simply without tools. It's large, but unobtrusive. It seems to work faster than an open compost pile, but it works best if you remember to turn and mix the compost every week. This is a good composter, but I found I really needed two...one to add things to while the other one 'cooks'.
