Buy Any 3 Fruit or Berry Plants & Save 20%

Short Description

Hard-to-find fruit. Large rose hips with cinnamon applesauce flavor.

Full Description

Now for something completely different;a fruit like no other. The flavor of this rose-relative is a culinary collage of loquat, kumquat, fig and dates, with smoky, spicy overtones: a bit like apple-butter. Growing on deciduous 20-foot tall trees, weirdly wonderful-looking 1" rust-rose fruits resemble russeted crabapples. The real weirdness comes at harvest time. After plucking the fruit, they require ?bletting?, which means letting the fruits ripen until almost rotten-looking; brown, wrinkled, squishy;and the inner pulp is brown and custard-like. Once bletted, eat the fruits immediately;the window of flavor opportunity is tiny! Splendid in chutney and jellies, or baked, roasted or stewed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It survived 1 summer in Phoenix, AZ It survived it's first summer in Phoenix, AZ- so it's tougher than one might think. I haven't seen much growth at all- not one branch, but it does have a few blossoms and flowers this year. I have put it on the garden line since the weather got hot, rather than the tree line in order to see if maybe it just needs a lot more water. It does look happier and is getting more leaves. I can't say much about the fruit, as I haven't been able to try it yet. But the quality bare root I received, I was happy with and it sprouted quickly.
