For earliest bloom, Start seed indoors about 10 weeks before the last frost in the spring. Sow seed 1/8" deep. If your area has a long growing season, Sow in average soil in full sun after danger of frost. Sow seeds about 10" apart and cover with 1/4" of fine soil. Firm lightly and keep evenly moist.
How to Grow
Seedlings emerge in 21-30 days. Thin to stand 18" apart when seedlings are 1-2" tall. If you Start your seeds indoors, transplant hardened-off seedlings to the garden after all danger of frost. Annual statice tolerates hot, dry conditions well. Plants are slow to establish and are best left undisturbed once in the ground. Deadheading prolongs blooming. Cut back dead foliage in the spring.
Annual statice is a must for cutting and drying. Cut statice when most of the flowers in the cluster have opened fully and hang them in small bunches in a warm, dark place to dry. It is also attractive in beds and borders where it can be a filler among other annuals.
