Sow outdoors in spring in full sun after danger of frost. Scabiosa prefers rich, well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. Sow seeds evenly and thinly and cover with 1/8" of fine soil. Firm lightly; keep evenly moist.
How to Grow
Seedlings emerge in 10-21 days depending on soil and weather conditions. Thin to stand about 12" apart. The plants may require staking. Blooms in summer. For earlier bloom, you can Start seed indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Transplant hardened-off seedlings to the garden after all danger of frost.
Starflower scabiosa adds a unique texture to dried arrangements. Pincushion flower is ideal for planting in masses at the back of the border. Its delicate blooms also make wonderful cut flowers for fresh arrangements.
