How to Grow
Seedlings emerge in 10-14 days at 70°F. Before transfer to garden, accustom to outdoor conditions by moving to a sheltered place outside for a week. Transplant the hardened-off seedlings to the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Portulaca prefers sandy, hot, dry locations in full sun. The plants require almost no maintenance once established in the garden and often reseed in favorable locations.
Portulaca is perfect for rock gardens and for beds and borders in drought-prone areas. It grows nicely between paving stones. The plants have a spreading habit, so they cascade gracefully from hanging baskets and window boxes. They also make a great annual groundcover.
