Poppy, California Watermelon Heaven
Easy to grow, fast flowering, super colors.
Mouth-watering color and silky crepe-paper petals make this poppy a scrumptious showpiece throughout summer. Splashy watermelon blooms are dotted with a delicious creamy white center, ideal for cooling sunny beds with small or large drifts. Easy to grow and fast to flower.
Sow in ordinary garden soil in full sun after danger of heavy frost. Sow thinly and evenly and cover with 1/4" of fine soil. Firm lightly and keep evenly moist.
How to Grow
Seedlings emerge in 10-14 days. Thin to stand about 10" apart when 1" high. For the most continuous bloom, remove the spent flower stems frequently. Toward the end of the season, leave some flowers to form seed; poppies often reseed when they are happy in their location.
Enjoy the beautiful blooms of these easy annuals in beds and borders. Poppies make wonderful cut flowers. Cut the flower when it is still in bud, and seal the cut end of the stem with a lighted match to prevent rapid water loss. Poppies are also excellent flowers for naturalizing in a wildflower meadow.
