How to Sow

SOW in ordinary garden soil in full sun after danger of frost. Sow seeds evenly and thinly and cover with 1/4" of fine soil. Firm lightly and keep evenly moist.

How to Grow

Seedlings emerge in 10-14 days. Thin to stand about 10" apart when seedlings are 1-2" high. Transplant seedlings outdoors after all danger of frost. Gomphrenas thrive in hot weather and tolerate dry soil. (Root rot can be a problem if you plant gomphrenas in wet soil.) These plants do not do as well in areas where summers are humid. Pinching is not recommended as it can interfere with a plant’s natural shape.

Harvesting

Use gomphrenas to edge beds and borders that contain flowers that thrive in full sun and well-drained soil. They combine well with achillea and coreopsis, annuals like salvias or sages, and herbs like lavender. Gomphrenas are fine container and cut-flower plants, and they also attract butterflies. Gomphrenas are staples of dried-flower arrangements. Cut stems just as the blooms open fully and hang in bunches in a warm, dark, dry place.
