How to Sow

SOW in average soil in full sun to part shade after danger of frost. In frost-free areas, sow from fall to spring. Sow seeds evenly and thinly and cover with 1/4" of fine soil. Firm lightly and keep evenly moist.

How to Grow

Seedlings emerge in 14-21 days. Thin to stand about 8" apart when seedlings are 1-2" high. Give cleome plenty of room, since individual plants can spread 2-3’ wide. Once established, cleome require little maintenance and never need staking.

Harvesting

Cleomes make striking, fast-growing annual hedges. Their thorns and dense foliage create an effective barrier, while prolific blooms create a pleasing mass of color. Add tall plants to the back of an annual, perennial or mixed border for their long bloom periods and airy flower heads. You can use them to fill in between clumps of perennials, and they combine well with many shrubs. Cleomes also make striking cut flowers.
