Hardy Zones 4-9
A strong growing perennial attracting bees and humming birds as well as providing a spicy fragrance to your garden. Two to three foot plants grow in a thick erect branching habit. Looks most attractive when planted in bold groups, or 2 or 3 plants. Thrives in full sun or partial shade, giving bloom most all summer long.
Plants spread very quickly, are of easy culture but need good air circulation. This is a remarkably disease and insect resistant perennial.
CULTURE:
SOIL:
Does best in moist soils that are well supplied with organic matter such as peat moss or leaf mold.
We would suggest that you fertilize your garden bed a week or two, prior to planting our Monarda. We recommend a commercial 5-10-5 fertilizer. A late summer or fall application is also recommended. Always follow the manufacturers instructions.
PLANTING:
Careful soil preparation is essential to assure years of beauty and good growth. The soil structure cannot be successfully altered once these perennials have been planted. We suggest you have your garden prepared at least one week before planting time. Plant as soon as the nursery stock is received. If planting must be delayed, place the plants in a cool, shaded area and keep the roots moist.
Dig holes large enough so roots may be spread out. Set plants with crowns at or just below the soil level. Firm the soil around the roots by pressing the soil with your hands. Water well to eliminate air pockets that may form around the roots. Add soil to the hole gradually filling the hole half full then adding water to settle the soil. Repeat this until the hole is completely filled.
SPACING PLANTS:
Set the plants to stand 12-15" apart.
MOISTURE REQUIREMENTS:
Additional watering may be needed especially during periods of hot, dry weather.
WHEN TO DIVIDE:
To prevent overcrowding, lift and divide plants every second or third year. Vigorous plants spread quickly. As plant center becomes bare, separate into pieces for re-planting and discard the hard woody centers. Always remove faded flowers to prolong the bloom period.
