Don't be alarmed! they were also the meatiest tomatoes I've ever seen and the taste was to die for.

But, they grew irregularly. Huge, massively lobed fruits. One lobe would be ripe and the other green as can be, so I thought, at first, they were different fruits. When I went to pick the ripe one, I learned that "they" were a single fruit on a single stem. Thus far, my research tells me little. Something about double-fertilizing, something else about tomato flowers each with multiple pistils. Didn't even know that was possible. It's all very confusing.

Not that I mind all that much, it's such a good tasting tomato and I'll grow more, but is there anything to be done?

Thanks in advance.

July 17, 2015 July 17, 2015 <![CDATA[Help I had a hail storm!]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/776/help-i-had-a-hail-storm%21 Just today a hail storm hit our area pretty bad. I planted all my vegetables on the 7th of this month and they were doing fabulous. My cucumbers were getting taller, so were my green beans. My tomato plants were doing pretty well and getting bigger but after today, it looks like someone went dancing in my garden.

It looks like a war zone out there, my mesclun is just flat to the ground, the stems of most of my green beans and cucumbers have either snapped right off by the leaves or very close to it. My tomato plants look sad too.

I am left with fear in my mind and so many questions that need answers. Will this make my harvest this year sparce?, will It regrow?, will It sprout back up or fluff back up?, how do I get it to keep growing?, do I snip off the stems on my cucumbers that are just barely hanging on or just let it be?, is this the end of all my labor?.

I was so proud of what I've accomplished and I could about cry now seeing the damage this hail caused. On a scale from 1 being good and 10 being bad, I would say this is most likely a 5.

Check out the photos below and please answer my questions if you can. I just need some hope that all my time, effort, sun burn and dirty dirt fingers wasn't in vain. Qua oc cho

Thank you guys.

Oh and by snapped stems I mean, the part that holds the leaves, not the stem that goes into the ground. They appear to still be in the ground but the parts that hold the leaves, some are just in bad shape.

Should I just pluck them all up and start again?.

I had read that It would be best to apply a fungicide to my veggies to prevent diseases. I want to go the natural way and have a recipe for a garlic spray which is 10 garlic cloves and one pint of water, mixed in a blender, strained and then sprayed on. Would this be okay to do for my veggies?.

<![CDATA[Tomatoes won't turn red]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/297/tomatoes-won%27t-turn-red I have to two tomato plants one in a pot and one in a topsy turvy. They are both beef steak variety tomatoes and neither have gotten tomatoes on them all season to be much bigger than cherry tomatoes. But with it becoming cooler I am worried that the tomatoes that are still on the vine won't turn red nor get any bigger. Any suggestions on what to do?

<![CDATA[Getting rid of tomato diseases in the off-season?]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/692/getting-rid-of-tomato-diseases-in-the-off-season My tomatoes have varying degrees of early blight and septoria. I believe that both of these problems can overwinter, either in the soil, or on weeds, or on plant waste. How can I ensure that these problems plaguing me this year don't return next year? I am considering soil solarization, But I am in zone 5 and will be running out of time for this very soon and it has already been a relatively cool summer here. I have a rather large garden, so crop rotation will be practiced. I have already treated this year's plants with copper, but I don't want to overdo it, since it has been suggested that too many copper treatments can build up in the soil and cause other problems. Any suggestions?

<![CDATA[Tomato Blossom End Rot]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/625/tomato-blossom-end-rot Hi, everyone! What is that powder that is dusted on the soil to prevent tomato blossom-end rot? I've tried spraying fungicides on the plants over the years, but I still lose a lot of tomatoes because of that darned B.E.R. Any other ideas? I'm anxiously awaiting your suggestions!

<![CDATA[Roma tomatos]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/708/roma-tomatos We are new to gardening and although our roma's did fantastic, many rotted on the plant. They started out not being staked because we read you don't stake roma's but then we had to put a stick by each one (24) and tie a rope around the plants to keep them upright. It seems that they were so 'thick' with tomatos that they squished next to one another and got rot spots. We had hay under them and that seemed to keep the area so 'wet' all the time that any that layed on the hay rotted as well. We did not have a very wet summer and we didn't water a crazy amount so not sure why it stayed so wet under the plants. Can anyone tell us why this happened to them? It seems they grew to many tomatos for each plant if that makes any sense. Thanks in advance for your ideas.Smile

<![CDATA[Burpee Super Sauce Hybrid Tomato]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/542/burpee-super-sauce-hybrid-tomato As a gardener with 50 years of growing experience I ordered the seeds for the Super Sauce Hybrid. Planted them under ideal growing conditions with only a germination of 5 out of the 60 plus seeds I planted. I am so disappointed in the quality of seeds that this company of 100 plus years are selling to their customers. I will never again order from Burpee. This is a insult to any dedicated gardener.Yell

<![CDATA[Tomatoes that look like they have white ash on them]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/538/tomatoes-that-look-like-they-have-white-ash-on-them Last summer I had tomato plants that I thought had 'ash' on them from a fire, but after a good rain, it came right back. It killed two plants and I tried to keep wiping it off, but I have no idea what it is. It was not ash as I had first thought and it was all over the entire plants. Any ideas on what it was or how to fix it? I had a lot of tomatoes on the vines before it showed up, but very few of them turned red or grew after that.

<![CDATA[Tomatoes FINALLY turn red only to be black/rotten on the bottom. ]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/300/tomatoes-finally-turn-red-only-to-be-black-rotten-on-the-bottom- I live in zone 7. ALL of my tomato plants in two different garden sites aren't doing well. The plants have grown and produced tomatoes but they stay green forever. A few started to turn red but only to have blackened/rottened bottoms. Sometimes there isn't much left of the tomato. I think this is called blossom rot but wanted to see what kind of feedback anyone might have. Meanwhile, I planted cherry tomatoes as well at both sites and they are doing great. Thanks!
