We've been figthing a losing battle against squirrels for the last several years, to the point that I didn't even want to grow tomatoes because the squirrels take them all. But my fiance insisted we try again. This year, they have stolen most of our tomatoes, all of our watermelons, and even some of our ground cherries. I've tried granualar deterents that you shake on the ground. I've tried hot pepper wax stray of the fruits. I put out a bowls of water for them because I read they will "drink" from the tomatoes. I've tried fermented garlic and hot pepper sprays. I even tried putting dirty clumps of my cat's litter out in the garden. But nothing works. Does anyone know of a good way to protect my poor tomatoes?

<![CDATA[Morning Glories with silver spots]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/693/morning-glories-with-silver-spots My morning glories are growig like crazy with blooms but the leaves have silver spots. It looks like someone splattered them with silver paint. Eventually the spot turns into a hole. I have these growing in planter boxes. So what pest is doing this to my mornng glories? I can't see anything and I water only the soil not the leaves.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I live in Southern Califorinia zone 9.

<![CDATA[Rhubarb]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/684/rhubarb For many years I have raised rhubarb since I prefer to eat my own produce. However, each year I spend a great deal of time pulling out yellowed leaves, and soggy stems. I suspect it's verticillium wilt but haven't been able to check this for sure. Does any rhubarb exist that is VFN or such like? I have heard there is not cure for verticillium wilt. I hate waste and pulling up and throwing away 1/3 of my crop is completely not acceptable!

Can anyone help? I live in Colorado Springs, CO

<![CDATA[Bug free Apples]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/504/bug-free-apples I am looking for a way to control the worms in my fruit. I ahve tried the milk jugs with a banana skin, vinegar, sugar and water for the past three years. Is seems like all this has done is increased the worm damage. I have honey bees so I have to be careful on what I use. Does anyone have any help in this problem?

<![CDATA[Beneficial nematodes]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/343/beneficial-nematodes I've been a back yard gardener all of my life ( 65 years now ). Last year I discovered and tried Beneficial Nematodes. I found this refrigerated plastic ball in my local garden center. Relatively expensive. I went directly home and mixed up this muddy looking concoction into my hose end sprayer. That's when I became a real " doubting Thomas ". I sprayed it on my rototilled soil and hoped for the best. This stuff proved to be pure magic !! I accidently became an organic gardener. ALL GRUBS were destroyed, therefore no Japanese beetles either. I had absolutely no insect problem on any vegetable plants !! None. The only plants that should have been sprayed with insecticide were my hosta & rose bushes. I will use the beneficial nematodes FOREVER. That's how very impressed that I was with my garden last year.

<![CDATA[ Late Blight on Tomato Plant in Earthbox]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/580/-late-blight-on-tomato-plant-in-earthbox I have a beefsteak tomato planted in an Earthbox. This plant is showing symptoms of Late Blight and it still has two dozen tomatoes that are starting ripen on it. Is there any way to get these tomatoes to fully ripen off of the vine? Is the soil still be able to be used for other plants? Is the soil still safe to use? If it's not, then is there anything that can be done to decontaminate the soil, if possible? Solarization?

<![CDATA[Pest prevention]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/540/pest-prevention We had a terrible time last year with cucumber beetles. We admittedly got started late dealing with the problem which may have contributed to it getting out of hand, but we have learned a lesson. We also have what I believe is called a cutworm problem? They are white grub looking pests that seem to hatch into white moths later in the season. We would also like to minimize these pests this year.

What are the best things we can do early, both to the soil prior to planting and to plants and soil after planting, to minimize the impact? We do not use any chemical pesticides other than Safer or similar products. We tried nematodes last year but are not convinced they had any positive effect.

What do others do to improve their chances of not being destroyed by these pests?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Rick

"Is there any way to prevent blight? My poor tomato plants have suffered this year. I've still been able to pick some but not as many as I'd like. I put a straw mulch down, use a drip hose and made sure the plants were trimmed for good circulation but still got caught with blight."
