I have planted mostly zinna and marigold seeds. I purchase the seed starting trays you sell with the water mat in the bottom. My seeds will sprout and shoot staight up with a pair of leaves at the top of the stem. The grow to about 3-4 inches then just keel over becaue their stems are too skinny and can't support itself. They never develop any other leaves (just the 2 at the top) I am following the instructions and water the mat as needed and controlling light. But every year the same thing, after several weeks they just keel over. What am I doing wrong?

Any help that anybody has I would appreciate!

thanks

Janewb

<![CDATA[First Garden]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/711/first-garden Hi guys. I bought a house with an already established vegetable garden but I have never had a garden before. That picture is from the home inspection and they ripped everything out of the ground and left it in a heap. I don't know exactly what they had planted. Is there anything I should do before the first snowfall (Western PA) -- spread mulched leaves over the planting area?? I guess I'm looking for advice and tips for a newbie.

Thanks!

Aaron

<![CDATA[Starting a veggie garden at High Altitude?]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/640/starting-a-veggie-garden-at-high-altitude Good evening! My husband and I are closing on a house on May 29th of this year. The house has existing garden which hasn't been used in years. My question is, if I can get the garden tilled, resoiled, and seeds planted, would it be considered to late to start growing? The altitude at the new house is just about 7,800 above sea level.

<![CDATA[Direct Seeding]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/622/direct-seeding Direct seeding or direct sowing basically means that you start plant seeds in your garden, rather than sowing earlier in pots. Many seeds of both flowers and vegetables can be started outdoors, at the start of your growing season. Seed packets have all of the planting instructions you will need.

What flowers and/or vegetables are you going to sow directly in your garden?

<![CDATA[Starting seeds inside getting lanky]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/623/starting-seeds-inside-getting-lanky I live in Chicago and started my perennials and annual seeds I about a week ago. Some of the seedlings (bachelor buttons) are getting tall and lanky. I started them in the flat with the plastic cover. I bought the biodegradable 3" containers so they have more room. Is this going to help or are they done for.

<![CDATA[Is it too late?]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/610/is-it-too-late Hey guys, I am in Silver Spring MD. I am just setting the eggplants, hot peppers and tomatoes to seed using the ultimate growing system. The average frost date is mid to end of April in my area. Given that I am starting barely two weeks before the last frost date, is it too late to get any tomatoes, eggplants or the peppers? Should I buy plants instead of trying to start from seed?

I will also start my gourds, okra and beans, but I think I have enough time for those.

Thanks.

<![CDATA[what herb/vegetable come up first for you?]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/602/what-herb-vegetable-come-up-first-for-you Every gardener needs signs of spring and alongside the crocus and early daffodils I always look for the lemon balm to emerge. Lemon balm emerges from dormancy with bright green leaves indicating that winter is finally ending. My rhubarb is also emerging - for the second time! The first attempt was early January after a very mild start to winter. Those shoots were killed when winter arrived but now some new shoots are tentatively emerging again.

So what is the first sign of spring in your garden??

<![CDATA[Garden Club]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/576/garden-club I was sitting here the other day and realized that the small city I live in did not have a garden club. So I decided to start one and on April 18th is the first meeting of the Wood village Garden Club. Wood village has a population of 3.870 and a very beautiful little city and now it will have its first garden club and can't wait to get it started. Does anyone have ideas or suggestions of how I should start i would love to hear them.

<![CDATA[Seed Starting]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/508/seed-starting Hello members!

Seed starting is upon us and we want to know:

What seeds is everyone growing indoors?

How do you normally start your seeds? In a greenhouse, under a light, or even a sunny window?

Not sure how to go about starting seeds indoors? We have a growing calendar to help you out with information regarding what seeds need to be started and when for your region! http://www.burpee.com/gygg/growingCalendarNoZipCode.jsp

<![CDATA[seed starting kit]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/559/seed-starting-kit I purchased the 72 cell seed starting kit and apparently didn't think the whole proces through. I am starting my seeds at different times as specified in several different forums. My problem is that the tomatoes are already sprouted to past the height of the "greenhouse" cover. Now what!
