Though Tree dahlias can be reasonably hardy in the South West they still don't like having their feet wet and with an annual rainfall or over 80 inches a year here they don't like it.(qua óc chó)
The few I have left in all have rotted.
Also by lifting I can get them into growth earlier so can take cuttings and also have them around 2ft tall when they are planted out, giving them a head start.
There are quite a lot of different varieties but the most common growing in the UK is D Imperialis.
The strange thing is that they don't come into flower here in the Northern Hemisphere till around November no matter if they are here in the UK, California, India or in Mexico.
I was in contact at one time with someone from Northern India who was working in the U.S.of A. He sent me a couple of pictures of tree dahlias taken at home with the Himalayas in the background, and they were real trees, as wide as they were tall.
The seed that he sent never arrived, pity as I had a feeling they might be a little more hardy than seeds from the normal source.
Quite a sight.

June 19, 2012 June 19, 2012 <![CDATA[Why do you love gardening?]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/222/why-do-you-love-gardening I love gardening because my Grandma had 32 grand children and Burpee's use to sell a packet of vegetable seeds for kids for a penny. My grandparents were very poor but they could afford that. Every grand child had a garden and Grandma would let us open the packet and talk about the seeds and we would plant them together. We each took care of our own garden. It was the one big present I got from her every year. I love my garden and think of Ganny every time I dig in the dirt! Thank you Burpee for making my childhood special! :-)

<![CDATA[Ideas for gardening with kids]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/223/ideas-for-gardening-with-kids I'm fairly new to gardening and am still learning myself, but I'd like to find fun and creative ways to get my kids involved. Any advice, ideas or resources would be much appreciated.

<![CDATA[Science experiments with seeds ]]> http://www.burpee.com/community/discussion/220/science-experiments-with-seeds- Are your kids less than enthused about getting back in the classroom? Ease them into their school studies with a lesson in the garden! Conduct experiments to teach your kids which conditions are best for plant growth by providing different levels of sun, water and soil. Have them keep a gardening journal highlighting the progress of their work.

What fun, creative ways have you gotten your kids to learn in the garden?
