What do you plant in sunny beds?

I recently cut down a tree and now have a big sunny spot to fill in my garden.  What's a great way to cover a lot of space with color - without spending a ton of money?

The least expensive way to go is with quick growing annuals like: French Marigold, Alyssum, Cosmos, Zinnia and Ageratum. Then start filling in with easy to grow perennials: Coreopsis, Echinacea, Gaillardia, Lavender, and Rudbeckia.

I really like using portulaca (Moss Rose) in my really sunny spots. It takes the sun well and doesn't mind getting a little dry. What do you think ?
