Soil in container

My half whiskey barrel only holds flowers.  The soil holds too much water and compacts and so do my raised beds.  What do I add to make the soil not so dense. Thank you.

Re: Soil in container

When growing in containers it is best to use a good quality potting soil.  Top soil is too heavy and will not drain correctly. You can add canadian peat moss about  1/3 volumethat whould improve the drainage, however it would be best just to use  potting soil.

Thank you.  I was going to add peat but thought it would hold more water?

Re: Soil in container

In our test garden we only use potting soil, for the best results.
