Ancient Tomatoes

I was looking at the Burpee catalog recently and looking at the tomato pages and I started to wonder: What did early tomatoes look like when Columbus arrived in South America? Were they tomatoes in North America? Did they look like cherry tomatoes or were they larger?

Re: Ancient Tomatoes

We did some research and find it likely that the early tomatoes from the New World were likely smaller yellow varieties first cultivated by the Aztecs. They are described in John Gerard's herbal from 1597, and he called them "apples of love". Wish we could send a picture!
