Mixing herbs and flowers

Can I use herbs as fillers and as backings for smaller container plants?

Hi, Why not?

Years ago I had a wonderful tarragon shrub in the midst of my daffodils. Every year the daffs closest to the tarragon lasted longest in the most healthy-looking condition.

Hi,

It's called mixing edibles and ornamentals or edi-mental gardening and is very trendy. Herbs have wonderful foliage and make an excellent foil for colorful annuals. Toss in a nasturtium for the hanging plant and a calendula for the upright plant along with some basil or oregano or dill and you'll a beautifully and completely edible container!

That is so cool. I never heard the term before... I LOVE IT: edi-mentals... I'm not sure that's the spelling, the text box won't let me move it to check the spelling.

Thanks for broadening my view.

Hi Edi-mental is my invented word to describe a garden with both edible and ornamental plants. I am happy you like the term - but you won't find it in spell check.

Ha! Perhaps it will be one of those words that's added to the dictionery. It should be. What a lovely word... you invented!
