Tomatoes that look like they have white ash on them

Last summer I had tomato plants that I thought had 'ash' on them from a fire, but after a good rain, it came right back.  It killed two plants and I tried to keep wiping it off, but I have no idea what it is.  It was not ash as I had first thought and it was all over the entire plants.  Any ideas on what it was or how to fix it?  I had a lot of tomatoes on the vines before it showed up, but very few of them turned red or grew after that.

it might be a powdery mildew you can get rid of it by adding baking soda and water a dish detergent and spray on the plant on weekly basis do not spay in direct sunlight and dont save left over spray
