Clematis does not like too much fertilizer and it will not flower if it gets if too much nitrogen. It is best to fertilize clematis with an organic  granular balanced fertilizer. Fertilize once early spring and once in June.

Also don’t prune the plant they set next year’s flowers on this year’s wood.  Clematis like their roots cool so use a mulch around the plant.
