Zone 9 Asparagus

I'm looking through the current Burpee catalogue, and I'm wondering if anyone has successfully grown the Mary Washington heirloom asparagus in Zone 9, or more specifically, Houston. I'd really love to, but if it'll do poorly I don't know if I want to risk it.

Re: Zone 9 Asparagus

Asparagus is just as hardy in zone nine. The most heat tolerant is ‘Jersey Knight’ or ‘Purple Passion’, however, it will be a challenge that first year.

Re: Zone 9 Asparagus

I'm not sure what your concern is in reference to the Mary Washington assparagus plants. But if it helps, I have grown that species (24 plants) successfully up here in Dallas. We typically cut our first spears the end of February and cut dailey until we are sick of them usually around June 1st. I compost heavily in the fall and cut the plants down once they have all turned brown.
