I am having a hard time getting any decent sized roots on my beets.  I have a raised bed with organic soil and mushroom compost mixed in.  I think them, but I just get mostly leaves.  Any ideas?

Re: Beets

There could be a couple of reasons. It is usually due to stress. First, beets always need to be thinned to about 1-3 inches apart planted too closely stresses the plants Make sure the area is free from weeds. PH, beets need a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 a low pH will prevent the roots from forming. Temperature, if the temperature is too high it will go to seed rather than produce the bottom. Phosphorus deficient  can also cause the roots not to form.
