In the fall growing garlic is confusing. Grow softneck in the south and hardneck in the north. They like well drained soil with a lot of organic matter mixed in. Separate the cloves from the bulb, plant the cloves 1 inch deep and 6 inches apart.  You will not get much top growth in the fall but you will in the spring. Harvest fall planted garlic late spring early summer.
