why soak seeds before planting

a good friend asked me 'why do you soak seeds before planting, and why do you say in warm water'? I hope my answer was kinda correct it was:  soaking in warm water speeds up germinatioc....soaked seeds seem to sprout quicker,as if they have been planted days or even weeks longer.it also seems to end their dormant period...enables a more through water penetration of the seed coat.my question is did I give a fairly accurate description of why soak seeds????? thanks mike burch

It also softens the seed coat to make it easier for the seed to germinate, however it not necessary for every seed.
