Re: What are some creative ways you use small spaces for gardening?

Here, it's like gardening at the bottom of a light-well. I'm up against a stockade fence with a tree beginning to grow over it and have three story buildings, all on the sunny side of my garden. Only about half of my garden plot is full sun at ground level. So I build up foot-high mounds and train vines (Brandy Boy tomatoes, Waltham Butternut squash & Supremo cukes) upward on seven foot high trellises, Which also frees up much-needed space. ***** I'm very careful not to place these tall plants in such a position to put the shorter crops in the shade though ***** The other thing I do is reuse my beds. Come August, the onions are harvested and after amending the soil with compost and a balanced fertilizer, I planted spinach and beets. Because light conditions in my small plot dictate which plants can go where, I can't move crops around from year to year. Instead, I amend the soil and move the dirt around and am thankful I have only a small plot.

My two things: I train plants upward into full sun conditions and do succession planting. So far, so good.

Are you planting determinate tomatoe variaties in buckets? This increased my tomato production in the space of a 3-5 gallon bucket. Use best soil and feed the plant as needed.  Good luck,  Nige

Another great idea is a vertical gardening system from www.woollypocket.com

I use container gardening, companion gardening, and trellises galore. I live on an end townhouse, so while I have a small yard in total, I do have it divided into front, side, and back portions. I try to plant veggies, herbs, and flowers in the front yard. To do this, I mostly use climbing plants, like beans, and indeterminate tomatoes, and down low I have zinnias, chives, mint, swiss chard, and beets. In the back on the side is a very small spot where I grow things in a very functional fashion, but I have to be carefull that I don't overplant, and use as many trellises as possible. I know it sounds weird, but right now, one of my trellises of choice is a 6ft tall wooden ladder. It's strong and it's compact.
