Straw Bale Gardening

2011 was my 2nd year of straw bale gardening and it worked great!

I had tomato yields that were fantastic (especially considering I'm doing this at 6500 ft above sea level!

I'd love to hear other gardeners' experiences with this kind of "container" gardening.

I found a place nearby that sells 80#bales of wheat straw. I bought one and plan to use as a cover in my raised garden beds this year. I did not use last year and lost a beautiful lettuce patch to a fungus.

Re: Straw Bale Gardening

If it is what I think, you take straw (not hay due to weed seeds in it) and put it around your plants and down the rows. I have used it under my staked tomatoes and it stopped the fungus and end rot on the fruit. It stops the rain from splashing up on them. Using it down the rows keeps the weeds down and keeps the moisture in the ground. At the end of the season, it adds some fluff to your soil and eventually breaks down. I have a very large garden and due to costs, can't use it everywhere but I do the same with my grass clippings after mowing, no problem with weeds with that either.
