seed starting

I will be attempting to grow some veggies from seeds for the first time and just bought a starter kit. Is the heating mat necessary or will placing the container on top of the fridge be sufficient? Also, is it a good idea to buy the two different flourescent light bulbs for the fixture?

Re: seed starting

Bottom heat is essential to good germination and fast, healthy growth. The top of your refrigerator can provide bottom heat but probably isn't a bright enough location to grow your seedlings and may prove a difficult area to water! If you do go that route, you will find a grow light very beneficial. Most fluorescent lights will emit the light range necessary to grow great plants!  - Chelsey Fields, Vegetable Horticulturist

Thank you for your response Chelsey! Once the seedlings sprout I plan to move them to a more convenient location under a flourescent light fixture. I am starting them this weekend. Hopefully I will have good results.
