Re: Heirlooms and Hybrids

  • Heirloom plants, also known as heritage plants, are open pollinated varieties that were introduced before 1940. They are more susceptible to diseases and other environmental problems. Some have unusual shapes, colors or flavors.
  • Open pollinated plants will produce offspring that look and taste like the parent plant. This is important if you save seeds.
  • Hybrids plants are modern varieties that are less susceptible to disease. They are the first generation bred from two different varieties. The offspring plant will not look similar to the parent plant.
