Growing Tomatoes

My Dad loves tomatoes and every spring/summer he tries to plant them in his yard.  Usually he can only get a couple to come up and they never grow to full size.  How can he start them inside and should he consider getting a raised bed to help outside?  The soil is not very good in the yard.  Any suggestions to have a successful tomato summer?  Thanks!

Re: Growing Tomatoes

It is better to start seeds inside since it is such a long growing season. They can be started under lights or on a sunny window. Start the seeds 8-8 weeks before the last frost date. You could use a raised bed, but it is important to mix in a lot of organic matter into the soil every year and to rotate your crops.
